Shields Road is the formation of new social housing on a brownfield site located to the north-west end of Shields Road, Motherwell. The site is situated close to Motherwell and Wishaw’s primary retail centre and local amenities.

The development  includes two residential blocks, both at ground plus three storeys, with each block containing 16 apartments. 

Working with HAUS Architects, we have formed an energy solution which looks to respond to energy conservation via a fabric first approach. 

In order to achieve the best holistic performance, we developed thirty-eight energy models, each uniquely different with only one variable. This allowed us to quantify each individual change meaning we could put a value on even the smallest of interventions. 

This approach provided enlightening insight into the influence and performance of different manufacturers products, different fabric modifications and smaller water heating systems. By developing solutions with this ‘micro-resolution’ and iterative approach, we were able to ensure the energy package was entirely informed, future-proofed and effective. 

Each individual apartment benefits from controlled Mechanical Ventilation Heat Recovery (MVHR), further ensuring heat losses are minimised. All hot water and space heating demands are satisfied by high-performance mono-bloc air-to-water heat pumps. 

The development also responds to the latest requirements around domestic sprinkler provision, with each flat benefiting from a centralised Category 2 sprinkler service.
