Today it is a unique partnership between Glasgow Life, the University of Glasgow and the National Library of Scotland. The partnership sees this historic and much-loved venue transformed into an exciting new centre of cultural excellence. Kelvin Hall now offers access to collections, temporary displays, teaching and research, alongside a state-of-the-art Glasgow Club health and fitness centre.

Nine years after a 2014 refurbishment, Glasgow Life appointed Cameron Kerr to study performance data, to identifying opportunities for performance refinement which could lead to energy and carbon dioxide savings. This work focused on the Heating, Ventilation and Air-Conditioning (HVAC) plant.

The installation contains a complex mixture of centralised plant, including Combined Heat and Power, Absorption Cooling, Water Cooled Chillers, Thermal Store, Adiabatic Coolers, Close Control Units and Free Cooling loops.

With support from project partner, IES, we studied 3 years of 30-minute interval data for all metered heating and cooling. This meticulous and detailed process generated information with enough resolution to obtain a clear picture of areas for investigation.

Our investigation works - supported by the data analytics and IES - have led to the identification of key improvements that will contribute to the longevity of central plant and will generate operational energy savings for the Client.

Kelvin Hall is a Grade B listed building developed in 1927 as an Exhibition Hall. View from Argyle Street looking South-West.
